UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, which is a prestigious recognition that applies to only 10% of all U.S. hospitals. UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011.

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides primary care for the high risk neonate and participates in the development and implementation of educational programs related to the high risk neonate and their family. The neonatal nurse practitioner functions from the time of birth of the high risk infant through their discharge: practices in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of an attending neonatologist; plans and presents in-service education to large groups in the community as well as within the medical center; writes and implements policies and procedures regarding the care of the high risk neonate; and participates in and may initiate research studies. Under the supervision of the Neonatal Director, the NNP directs the management of patient care of neonates by 4th year medical students and orients and directs patient care of neonates by interns during their rotation.

NNPs each manage a case load of critically ill neonates. They act as a liaison and in collaboration with other medical center departments, community agencies, and consultants.
